De par sa taille et sa situation, l'Hotel Lord Byron tient une place particulière parmi les hôtels de luxe à Rome. Avec ses 32 suites et chambres, il garantit une atmosphère exclusive et discrète.
Situé dans une ancienne villa patricienne de style Art Déco dans le quartier exclusif de Parioli, l'hôtel a comme voisin une série d'ambassades, dont celle de la Belgique juste en face et celle du Danemark au coin de la rue.
Dans les quatre dernières années, j'ai passé trois séjours au Lord Byron. Je ne suis pas le seul à estimer l'hospitalité de l'hôtel ainsi que la qualité de sa cuisine, bien que celle-ci ait malheureusement sa fermeture annuelle lors de ma dernière visite.
Il y a quelques années, pendant une conversation avec le propriétaire, j'ai appris que rien ne le destinait originellement à devenir hôtelier car Amedeo Ottaviani a étudié la médecine et avait l'intention d'exercer ce métier. Son père tenait un petit hôtel à Florence, le Regency. De lui, il a appris le sens de l'hospitalité. En effet, le père d'Amedeo Ottaviani est né dans un château de la région d'Ombrie, connue pour ses vallées sinueuses. Les grands-parents de l'actuel propriétaire de l'Hotel Lord Byron aimaient recevoir. Le sens de l'ospitalità est donc bien ancré dans le sang de la famille.
Amedeo Ottaviani est depuis bien des années le président de l'ENIT, l'Office National Italien du Tourisme. Son fils tient d'ailleurs une entreprise de catering de luxe qui connaît beaucoup de succès.
Amedeo Ottaviani m'a expliqué que dans ses hôtels à Rome et à Florence, le client doit se sentir comme dans une résidence privée. L'idée est donc de ne pas établir une grande structure, mais de recevoir les hôtes dans un cadre intime. L'excellence du service et la discrétion sont les deux priorités de la maison.
La Villa Lord Byron n'a jamais hébergé le fameux écrivain anglais, car elle a seulement été construite dans les années 1930 par un architecte inconnu...

In Rome’s exclusive Parioli quarter and just steps away from the prestigious Villa Borghese lies one of the most impressive members of the elite “Small Hotels of the World,” Hotel Lord Byron. Once a patrician villa, Hotel Lord Byron sits atop a small hill in a charming, peaceful neighborhood where embassies and modern manors overlook the Eternal City.
As we ascended the steps to enter this elegant, five-story White House, replete with spectacular terraces and rooms that open to awning-covered balconies, we sensed that we were about to experience old-world hospitality in a delightfully placid atmosphere. After receiving a pleasant welcome and hotel introduction from the friendly staff, we noticed the comfortable book-lined waiting area behind the counter where stunning portrait paintings decorated the walls.
Once in the room, however, we were treated to a Thirties-style art-deco design that featured portraits of famous actresses adorning our walls. The dark wood furnishings here are highly lacquered, gleaming with round or rounded surfaces, round knobs, and thin cylindrical legs. Glossy, one-foot-high dark-wood base-moulding surrounded our room met by a magenta carpet that gave the room a regal feeling. These rich colors were tastefully complimented by an upholstered magenta headboard where the stylized HLB monogram appeared above our pillows. The walls were covered with cushiony fabric, matched by floor-to-ceiling drapes of the same material, and accented by magenta drapery. An off-white coffered ceiling, with indirect lighting provided a comfortable, soothing radiance from above. Our room offered a walk-in closet with a sensor-activated ceiling light. This area also featured a hotel safe for our use. Behind a gleaming, lacquered pocket door, our bathroom offered a spacious yet convenient arrangement of all the essentials, including an extra-large square-shaped shower head over the bath tub...

Si vous avez la chance de rencontrer M. Amedeo Ottaviani et qu’il vous tend sa carte, vous ne lirez pas qu’il est Manager ou Président de Vintage Hospitality, mais simplement « hôtelier ». Avec passion, Amedeo Ottaviani cherche à faire le bonheur de ses hôtes. Et il réussit. Dans le Parioli, un des quartiers les plus élégants de Rome, tout près du parc de la Villa Borghese, à quelques pas du Musée d’art moderne et des collections d’art étrusque de la villa Giulia, l’hôtel Byron est un des exemples de l’hospitalité vintage telle que A. Ottaviani l’a imaginée et réalisée. A-t-il donné à ses hôtels des noms à consonance britanniques —Lord Byron à Rome et Regency à Florence— parce qu’il a créé des maisons idéales pour accueillir une clientèle de voyageurs exigeants ? C’est ainsi qu’on imagine les Anglais au XIXème siècle —intrépides mais avides de confort— ou ces femmes et ces hommes pressés à la Morand qui voyageaient dans les années trente. Si le Regency s’est installé dans l’ancienne demeure du premier Ministre au temps où Florence était encore la capitale de l’Italie, le Lord Byron tout blanc avec ses ferronneries noires et seulement 32 chambres est ordonné comme un hôtel particulier art-déco ¬entrée, salon, bibliothèque. Tableaux, objets anciens, Lalique, Ruhlmann… Dans les chambres d’inspiration 1925, moquette rouge et bois précieux. La rumeur de Rome est loin mais la Piazza di Spagna n’est qu’à cinq minutes puisque la limousine de l’hôtel fait la navette. M. Amedeo Ottaviani recherche la perfection et il l’atteint. Sans doute parce il est présent, que rien ne lui échappe. Au Lord Byron, pas un détail n’est laissé au hasard. Et ça se sent. Même si ne vous résidez pas à l’hôtel, découvrez le Sapori : un des plus délicieux restaurants de Rome. Allo straniero ignaro di vita romana, l’immagine che può balzare alla mente, scorrendo una certa parte di Roma, è quella di un André Gide a passaggio nei viali alberati di Villa Borghese. Con un evidente piacere edonistico, lo scrittore francese ha qui tratto, accarezzato dalla luce tersa filtrata dal fogliame, la sua spiritualità mistica e filosofia di vita narrata nei suoi Nutrimenti terrestre.
A pochi passi da quei soavi giardini, proprio sopra il giardino zoologico, una bianca dimora de XX secolo si fregia del nome di altro scrittore, l’inglese Lord Byron, amante dichiarato anch’esso dell’Italia.
